The Maltese Islands consist of Malta, Gozo, Comino and two other uninhabited islands. They are situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea 93 km from Sicily and 290 km from North Africa. An English-speaking country boasting over 7,000 years of history and 300 days of sun, Malta has got something for everyone.
Valetta
ValettaA stroll through timeValletta, Malta’s capital was named after its founder, the respected Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Jean Parisot de la Valette. The city is busy, yet retains a timeless atmosphere. The grid of narrow streets boasts some of Europe’s finest art works, churches and palaces.
Hosting a vast cultural programme, walking around Valletta you’ll come across an intriguing historical site around every corner: votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms high up on parapets. Narrow side streets are full of tiny quaint shops and cafés, while Valletta’s main streets are lined with larger international branded shops for fashion, music, jewelry and much more.
Mdina
MdinaOld capital city as rare gemMdina, also called the Silent City, is surrounded by fortified bastion walls and sits on top of one of the highest hills of Malta. There’s a mythical sense to the city when you enter it and you can almost taste the history as you walk its streets. At its heart, you’ll find the imposing St. Paul’s Cathedral and its small square in front, while a few chapels are open to admire to the public in a few of the smaller streets. The main entrance and other squares were used to film scenes from the popular TV series Game of Thrones.
Gozo
GozoSister islandThough separated from mainland Malta by a mere 5km stretch of sea (25 minutes by ferry) Gozo is distinctly different. Smaller, more remote and less built-up than Malta itself, it is a popular destination to sightsee, enjoy nature and slow down. There is something for everyone on the sun-drenched, warm-hearted eco-island of Gozo. If Odysseus arrived today, he would find it even harder to leave.
Other highlights in Malta
Maltese history
Malta has plenty of sun and sea, but its USP is its 7,000-year history. The extraordinary Stone Age temples, complex megalithic architecture are older than the pyramids of Egypt & Stonehenge in the UK!
Popeye’s village
A purpose-built film set for the 1980 live-action musical feature film ‘Popeye’ starring the late Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall. The set was left in place and is used as an open-air museum and seaside resort. Often used for events, conferences and even weddings, it offers an extremely unique experience.
Comino
A tiny island sandwiched between Malta and Gozo, Comino has a population of just 2 people, and is heavily visited by tourist in the summer months for the crystal clear waters it offered. Featuring in movies such as Troy and the Count of Monte Cristo, this island is also popular for trekking and team building events.
