    Bratislava lies on the beautiful blue Danube, arguably the most important river in central Europe. And no, the river was not named after Johann Strauss waltz. It was the other way round. It is said that Strauss composed the first melodies of his famous waltz in Bratislava in 1852. The river has long been of the utmost importance to Bratislava. Nowadays the Danube serves as a national boundary between Slovakia and Hungary and Austria.

    The history of Banská Bystrica is inextricably linked with the mining of precious metals - silver and copper. Thanks to its mineral wealth, the importance of the settlement of Bystrica grew rapidly in the past and in 1255 King Belo IV of Hungary granted it extensive privileges and elevated it to the status of a town. The golden era in the history of Banská Bystrica was the period of the 15th and 16th centuries, when the successful Thurz-Fugger copper mining company operated here.

    The High Tatras are the smallest mountains in the world and are one of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. The mountains offer countless possibilities for hiking of all levels. 6 of the High Tatras mountains exceed 2,500 metres and a large number of others exceed 2,000 metres. The highest Slovak peak Gerlachovský štít is located here. The Lomnicky Peak is also a popular tourist destination, which is reached by a very popular funicular railway and is home to the highest botanical garden in Europe.
