Our industry may be temporarily on hold but if any good is to come of this, the absence of incentive travel is proof positive that it is the single most effective way of motivating and strategically growing businesses of all sizes. While we wait for open borders and the safety of a vaccine, some companies have opted for virtual meetings and tours, or cash and merchandise rewards. These all pale in comparison to recognition of peers and team driven programs and it has brought renewed awareness in the irreplaceable value of incentive travel. So the idea of there not being a return to normal is not a probability in any shape way or form. This is the time to prepare and anticipate the return of MICE business and the critical need to help our clients to get back on their road to achieving company goals. We will probably not look the same but our industry is built on being original, innovative and creative. It’s time to get back to basics with program elements that engage and amaze while we ensure the safety and success of its participants. I’m happy to share with you!
The Elephant in the Room
What does that look like? First of all, it is important to address the elephant in the room, the pandemic. It is important to know protocol from the airport to the hotel and every possible venue of a trip. Knowledge is power. The more informed you are, the safer the clients will feel in any destination. Know your numbers and proudly discuss how your destination has flattened the curve. Then, it is most important to be conscious and aware of company budgets. We are not alone in this and even the largest companies are trying to recover from the unfortunate effects of the pandemic. Discuss budgets openly and what you can do to deliver the desired experience within the current conditions. They will remember you for your honesty and any flexibility and trust you with larger budgets in the future. Always lead with the thought that you are in this for the long term and not just a quick return. Lastly and probably most importantly, is communication. As you know, our partners become friends for life when we approach with dignity, integrity, and most importantly a shared purpose for the greater good.
