Maldives is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. It consists of atolls, coral reefs and low-lying coral islands. There are 22 geographical atolls made up of about 1200 islands which are divided into 20 administrative units. Not all islands are inhabited. In fact only about 200 islands are occupied and are used for various activities the most important of which is tourism.
White Sand Beaches
The Maldives is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. However most of them do not have permanent borderlines as sand moves around the coral islands every season. All islands have clean, white, fine sand which looks like flour, embracing the round “emerald” of tropical vegetation. That is because the beaches remained untouched. No breakwaters accent the shore, no walls cover the horizon, no other coarser sand fills the gaps. These beaches are always wide in many parts of the island.
The Maldives are known for their natural environment including the blue ocean, white beaches, and clean air. The climate of the Maldives is ideal for visitors to get engaged in water sports such as swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, water-skiing, windsurfing and kite boarding. Underwater restaurants, rooms, Spas in most resorts make the Maldives a unique destination.
